Conservatives cannot understand or accept what law is or why it should exist, as they are showing in Congress. They are preventing Congress from creating or applying laws in their cat fights to impose their values onto everyone.

Laws define limits to allow ordered existence. Evaluation is required. That's why Trump cannot be bound by laws. His defiance and support by his sycophants will not allow the rationality required to determine how laws should apply to his purposes.

Some commenters are saying the two recent court cases show that the process still works. The cases do not show that; and the process is not working, as fascism is reducing social existence to gutter levels.

As legal experts have been saying, the Hunter Biden situation never goes to court, unless it is part of a larger criminal case. Guns flow like water due to the conservative misinterpretation of the Second Amendment, which says a "well-armed militia" must be allowed to acquire guns. So conservatives seem to assume that the amount of crime they promote turns the whole society into a well-armed militia.

The police often do not investigate trivial law breaking, because they have limited time and recourses and laws are supposed to have a purpose in accomplishing something. That includes most illegal gun purchases. The law needs to exist to define the limits of a problem, but it can only be applied under serious situation.

Determining the difference between a serious situation and endless trivia is how laws are supposed to be applied. But in the Hunter Biden case, when the initial attempt was to do exactly that with a normal plea bargain, the conservatives blew up and insisted a major case had to be developed. So one of their kind created a major case out of Hunter Biden's violation of gun laws.

First and foremost is the ungodly expense of the case. Not only investigators, lawyers and court staff had to take up several weeks of time, fourteen jurors had to have their lives disrupted. There was no question what the law said. The whole question is why in the abyss did anyone spend that much time and expense on a two bit violation involving eleven days of a drug addict owning something he never used and hardly realized existed? There was no social problem resulting from Hunter Biden's gun purchase. So an expensive social problem was created to please the conservatives.

No one wants to second guess judges, but I expect the judge to chastise the prosecutors more than the criminal at the sentencing. The jury had no choice but to render a guilty verdict; but the prosecutors had no business wasting that much time and money creating a problem where there was none. There are more important things for law enforcement to be doing.

The Hunter Biden case did not show that the process still works; it showed that incompetent corrupters took over the social order to reduce existence to a lower level of fascism.

Trump's case was the opposite significance. His crimes with business records were also common, so they too were not normally prosecuted as such. But again, it is the related crimes that determine the significance. In Trump's case, the real crime was putting a criminal in control of the world through campaign violations by breaking laws related to the method of acquiring that power, as earlier impeachments showed.

Yet Trump's sycophants insist that Trump's infringement was so trivial that only unjust prosecutors would have taken it up. Again, the judge is not likely to impose a significant penalty, because he already said he will not allow the case to interfere with the election process.

The Supreme Court determined earlier that it would not allow the judicial system to disrupt the election process. That means Trump will not go to jail or be restricted by home confinement. Even though Trump's bookkeeping crime was related to his election, the whole election process is so much larger than a minor court case that the judges do not want to disrupt the process.

What it means is that laws have purposes related to solving problems which are definable and must be applied with rationality. Strip away the rationality, and there are no laws, which is what conservatives are trying to achieve with Trump showing how extreme the lawlessness can be.
