The science fiction writers worth reading make social points and use extreme context to get complexities out of the way. But incompetent corrupters don't understand the abstractions of social complexities and assume science fiction writers are predicting and designing the future.

So a lot of persons assume humans are going to explore the galaxies with magical technology. On that basis, they assume going to Mars is the first step; and they required the government to get involved.

But no one who is realistic assumes it is possible, because there isn't enough energy in hydrogen and oxygen to be doing anything significant in space. So the government decided they need a staged process, where they move energy to the moon first and then refill on the way to Mars.

Now add that up. What happens to the first persons on Mars? There won't be enough energy there to get back or the billions of dollars worth of launch equipment required.

But the government keeps pretending anyway to keep the good times rolling.
