Power mongers took over the social structures and converted them into power structures for their personal gain at everyone else's expense. They fought a war against the lower classes blaming them for their inability to think straight.

Drunk on power they destroyed the energy and transportation systems to remove a boogeyman from the atmosphere. Being unable to add and subtract, they billed the government for it. Since they loved the kids and pets more than anyone else, the government agreed to pay for it.

They left no stone unturned in converting physics into fraud leading up to fascism as the solution to society's problems. To escape the wrath of the public who felt cheated by the process, they built a cheap rocket and headed for Mars. Luckily, it exploded shortly after take-off; and everyone lived happily ever after.
