Increased political polarization is being recognized as a problem in getting things done. There is a basic moral corruption at the starting point of that problem in terms of intolerance.

Trolling is a related problem. The concept of trolling started as a concern for trouble makers on the internet. It then rapidly evolved into an opposition to any criticism. Criticism is now becoming an evil, where it has been, and should be, a necessary and constructive thing. The internet is transforming meanings and concerns.

Ten years ago, there were discussion type web sites, often taking up the subject of global warming. Anyone who as much as explained the errors was branded as a troll and kicked off those web sites. So the demand is for total agreement, and the product is polarization of groups which are at each others throats.

Rational persons want to know what opponents are saying. "Know thy enemy," is a historical exhortation, not to mention the fact that opponents can make useful suggestions. Those days are long gone.

To sacrifice the rationality that is gained through the interaction of diverse realities means motives are the driving force with rationality being a negative thing. How could society be right about greenhouse gases, renewable energy, electric vehicles and self-driving when rationality gets in the way of motives?
