Why Government Matters

A government of laws replaces the whims of totalitarian dictators. Those are the only two alternatives that exist in controlling complex human societies.

The evolution of human concepts of government over the past 5,000 years has largely had the purpose of restricting the destructivity of dictators. There is no theoretical possibility of dictators adequately meeting the needs for government. There are needed mechanisms that are not produced by the whims of dictators.

Complex societies need mechanisms for creating ordered existence. The mechanisms must include the specialized knowledge that not everyone can acquire and certainly escapes the awareness and experience of dictators.

Also required are mechanisms of accountability including involvement by the persons who are affected by the problems and solutions. Too often, dominating persons impose solutions that don't work.

Only a government of laws can meet the requirements. Assuming that a dictator can replace a government of laws is a disconnect from the demanding requirements for solving problems in a complex society.

The persons who promote dictatorships are so disconnected from reality that they don't know what complex problems are or how to solve them. They assume that everything takes care of itself and only the values and purposes matter. It takes a degree of knowledge to know that knowledge is relevant. Dictatorships come out of a degree of ignorance that oversimplifies the nature of problems and the solutions.
