Agriculture GMOs And No-Till

The main GMOs (genetically modified organisms) for corn and soybeans do not have the purpose of improving agriculture. Their purpose is convenience at the expense of better agriculture. Yet, GMOs are promoted by some types of activists as a necessity for feeding the hungry. Food would be more available to the hungry without GMOs.

Herbicide resistant GMOs allow spraying to replace tillage. Tillage is far better for agriculture than GMOs by all criteria. Farmers accept GMOs as a substitute for tillage, because they can farm more acres, since tillage is time consuming.

Yields are much higher with tillage than with GMOs for two major reasons. One, tillage greatly improves the condition of the soil allowing oxygen and water to enter more easily. Two, screwing around with DNA can never improve the total adequacy of DNA. There are 500 million years of evolution optimizing DNA. No analysis can determine what improvement would be. To change one function disrupts something else.

Increasing yield has never been the purpose of any GMO. The purpose with corn and soybean GMOs is to resist weed spray or pests.

The yields of GMO crops are less than nonGMO equivalents. One reason is that the insertion of genes is a disordered process. The new genes end up in numerous locations on the DNA which are not determined. The procedure is to observe the end result to see if it has the desired properties.

Absence of tillage is another reason why yields are lower with GMOs. Avoiding tillage is the primary incentive for farmers who plant corn and soybean GMOs. Persons who promote GMOs assume that absence of tillage is good for the ground and reduces erosion. The opposite is true.

University scientists have been conducting hundreds of studies on how to reduce gully erosion that results from no-till. Absence of tillage promotes erosion, because water moves over the surface much faster without tillage. Residues on the surface do not stop erosion without being worked into the surface. Water goes under and around the residues when not worked in.

No-till is so detrimental to agriculture that it was not being significantly used before GMO farming. Besides promoting erosion, no-till causes residues to build up on the surface which interferes with planting. No-till also reduces the ability of moisture and oxygen to enter the soil by leaving a hard surface.

All of these detrimental effects are tolerated for one reason only: They allow farmers to plant more acres not having to till the ground to get rid of weeds. Tilling corn and soybeans gets rid of all weeds.

Persons who promote GMOs tend to assume that weeds would grow without spraying GMO crops. It's not true. Tilling gets rid of weeds more effectively than spraying. At this time, corn and soybean GMOs are becoming non-effective due to developed resistance of weeds to the spray.

Power mongers get stupid persons to promote their corruptions, so the promoters believe in their corruptions and allow the deciders to keep their hands clean. Tie with a mother bear and her cubs but not fools and their folly.
